TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — A new senate bill would restrict what people on food stamps can eat.
Currently, EBT card users are allowed to purchase most food items except hot foods.
But if SB 2293 passes, the restriction would change and only allow these customers to buy healthy
food and beverage items only.
The one thing that needs to be addressed before this can pass, shoppers say, is the price difference between healthy items and not so healthy items.
“I have mixed feelings about it,” said Enoch Smithey of Kilgore Supermarket. “I know everyone needs to eat healthy, but forcing someone to do something,I don’t know about that,” said Smithey.
“Well that would be a good thing,” said shopper Sandra Doss. “But sometimes you have to think about the people who have kids and kids don’t always want to eat healthy,” said Doss.
If it passes, the changes would be effective July 1.
