Talented player: The 6ft former Florida International University Panther was arrested yesterday
The successful coach of a girls’ high school basketball team has been charged with three counts of sexual battery on a minor.
Marquita Adley, 25, was accused of having sex with a member of her travel team and was arrested yesterday in Pembroke Pines, Florida.
The 6ft interim coach at West Broward High School was charged at Broward County Jail, the Sun Sentinel reported.
It is unclear whether the alleged victim was student, but they were under 18 years old.
The travel team is unrelated to the high school side the former Florida International University Panthercoached to a district title and deep into the regional playoffs this season.
West Broward Athletic Director Jim Darr said he was ‘shocked’ and ‘sorry to hear the news’ about the coach of the school’s girls’ team, Lady Bobcats.
‘As a coach, she did a good job with the kids,’ he said. ‘She worked them hard, taught [them] as she should as a coach [and] she was developing the players that she had.’
Great past: Marquita Adley was a basketball star at Florida International University for five years
Before playing for FIU, the forward played for Monsignor Edward Pace High School where she was first team all-county and all-state for three years.
Each count alleged against Adley holds a $5,000 bond, according to FIU Student Media. The trial is still pending.
Adley attended FIU for five years between 2005-2010 and averaged 8.2 points per game and 8.5 rebounds per game.
In 2005-6 the Panthers had great success, advancing to the semi-finals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
