When most women get a ‘boob job’, their breasts grow in size, but for twins Tanesha and Tiwan Sweet, going under the knife meant a long-overdue reduction.
The 42-year-old sisters from Long Branch, New Jersey, had been teased, and harassed and physically burdened on account of their size 40G assets.
But after finally discovering that health insurance would cover the cost of the procedure, they had them reduced to a size 38DD.
Transformed: Twins Tanesha and Tiwan Sweet were bullied and harassed until breast surgery reduced their chest size from 40G to 38DD
Tanesha spoke to ABC about the trauma of becoming an adult with a body that caused her crippling back pain not to mention emotional agony.
People, she said would stare at her and her sister when they went to the beach even despite the layers they wore in an attempt to cover up.
‘We’ve even had cars stop, look and whisper while they’re pointing at us,’ she admitted.
‘I always went to work wearing two bras and a sweat top, and I would never take it off, even if it was 90 degrees out,’ she confessed following surgery that has left the two women feeling confident in public for the first time.
But older patients in the nursing home where she worked would still grope her, she said.
Before and after: Dr Ashinoff who operated on the twins says that many women with large breasts suffer physical and emotional trauma before opting for surgery
Both she and her sister Tiwan resisted advice from friends and family about having the surgery, believing it to be too expensive and not worth even considering.
But what they didn’t know is that the $5-8,000 surgery is considered a medically justifiable for women who are physically and emotionally affected by the symptoms.
In fact, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast reduction surgery was the 8th most common cosmetic procedure in 2011.
‘I always went to work wearing two bras and a sweat top even if it was 90 degrees out’
Dr. Russell Ashinoff of The Plastic Surgery Center who performed the reductions, removed about 2.5 to 3lbs of fat from each breast; a difference that has changed their lives.
‘I haven’t had a back spasm since the surgery. I have had no pain at all,’ Tanesha revealed, adding with a chuckle, ‘I can finally buy a size extra-large shirt now, and I can also wear button-up shirts, which I could never wear before.’
Dr Ashinoff is amazed that in this day and age, people can still be so insensitive towards women like Tanesha and Tiwan.
He told ABC: ‘Women often come in with social complaints. People make fun of them, stare and there’s outright sexual harassment, and it’s hard to believe it’s still happening in 2012.’
Besides the bullying and groping, there all kinds of other physical ramifications of having such a generous bust too, Dr Julius Few from Chicago explained.
The most unpleasant of these is a skin condition called intertrigo.
It’s a rash that can occur between the breasts and the upper belly or in the crease under the breasts,’ Dr Few expanded. ‘It can get infected and form little ulcerations and things like that.’
Luckily, that isn’t a problem the twins have to worry about any longer. Since the surgery, Tanesha says she hardly feels any discomfort.
‘If you’re having back pain and there’s emotional pain, I would say to do it,’ she urged anyone in her situation. ‘I wish I would have done it sooner.’
