A father has died protecting his eight-year-old son from shots reportedly fired by two men who opened fire outside their home.
Fred Martin Jr., 28, was cleaning out his garage in Inglewood, California when two unknown men stormed in and began shooting, friends said.
Mr Martin jumped to protect his son Tre and was shot in the chest and stomach as he pushed the boy to the ground and covered him.
A father’s love: Fred Martin, known to his friends and family as Freddie Mac, has died after protecting his eight-year-old son Tre from random gunfire outside their home in Inglewood, California
The assailants ran off and no arrests have been made, police said.
Mr Martin was rushed to hospital but died during surgery. His son was grazed by a bullet but was not seriously hurt.
A website set up to raise donations for Mr Martin’s children paints a picture of the hero father as a popular man devoted to his family.
His wife Amanda Grant, to whom he had been married 11 months, is pregnant with their first child, it said.
Devoted: Friends said that Tre, pictured with his father at his graduation, was Mr Martin’s main motivation for achieving a degree from Texas Southern University
When Mr Martin, known as Freddie Mac to his friends, and high school sweetheart Ebony Delton gave birth to Tre in 2003, his life changed, the site said.
‘Tre immediately became the joy of Fred’s life and Fred dedicated himself to Tre like nothing in his life before,’ it reads.
‘Tre was Fred’s main motivation for earning his college degree in Sociology from Texas Southern University in December 2006.’
After he graduated, he moved to Inglewood to be closer to his family and son, and began working for Kaiser health services.
He married Amanda in May last year and they moved to a home next to his grandmother in Inglewood. It is believed he also worked as a probation officer.

The site also describes Mr Martin as a sports enthusiast who had played football throughout his youth and as a quarterback in high school.
It claims that Mr Martin was with his son and the boy’s godfather, Joey Hickman, when the men attacked on Tuesday around 7 p.m.
The message concludes: ‘This unexpected tragedy has hit the family extremely hard. Your support will be greatly appreciated by the family.
‘It will also show the family, most importantly Fred’s children, just how important he was to our community.’
A friend on Twitter added: ‘He got shot at his house. It’s looking like a random act of violence.’
