The ultimate act of love: Father dies protecting his son, 8, from gunfire outside their home

A father has died protecting his eight-year-old son from shots reportedly fired by two men who opened fire outside their home.

Fred Martin Jr., 28, was cleaning out his garage in Inglewood, California when two unknown men stormed in and began shooting, friends said.

Mr Martin jumped to protect his son Tre and was shot in the chest and stomach as he pushed the boy to the ground and covered him.

The assailants ran off and no arrests have been made, police said.

Mr Martin was rushed to hospital but died during surgery. His son was grazed by a bullet but was not seriously hurt.

website set up to raise donations for Mr Martin’s children paints a picture of the hero father as a popular man devoted to his family.

His wife Amanda Grant, to whom he had been married 11 months, is pregnant with their first child, it said.

When Mr Martin, known as Freddie Mac to his friends, and high school sweetheart Ebony Delton gave birth to Tre in 2003, his life changed, the site said.

‘Tre immediately became the joy of Fred’s life and Fred dedicated himself to Tre like nothing in his life before,’ it reads.

‘Tre was Fred’s main motivation for earning his college degree in Sociology from Texas Southern University in December 2006.’

After he graduated, he moved to Inglewood to be closer to his family and son, and began working for Kaiser health services.

He married Amanda in May last year and they moved to a home next to his grandmother in Inglewood. It is believed he also worked as a probation officer.

The site also describes Mr Martin as a sports enthusiast who had played football throughout his youth and as a quarterback in high school.

It claims that Mr Martin was with his son and the boy’s godfather, Joey Hickman, when the men attacked on Tuesday around 7 p.m.

The message concludes: ‘This unexpected tragedy has hit the family extremely hard. Your support will be greatly appreciated by the family.

‘It will also show the family, most importantly Fred’s children, just how important he was to our community.’

A friend on Twitter added: ‘He got shot at his house. It’s looking like a random act of violence.’

The gunfire broke out in the 3200 block of West 109th Street on Tuesday.

 

It was just one of three shootings in Inglewood that day, according to City News Service.

 

Later that night, a 25-year-old man was found riddled with bullets in a car, while a 31-year-old man was found shot in both legs two miles away.

Inglewood police have not identified any connection between the three shootings.

The website set up for his children, called Mac Martin’s Kid’s Fundaims to raise $25,000. So far it has raised nearly $1,000.
