Arrested: Anthony Matthews is accused of tying up, burning and assaulting his 26-year-old girlfriend after keeping her hostage for a month
A Brooklyn man imprisoned and tortured his 26-year-old girlfriend in his apartment for more than a month, said police.
Anthony Matthews allegedly tied the woman up, burned her with an iron and a heated screwdriver and smashed several of her teeth out by shoving a gun into her mouth.
Matthews, 31, was arrested after police officers responded to a 911 call on Wednesday morning and found the woman at a medical center with multiple injuries.
When police went to Matthews’ Brooklyn, New York, home he tried to escape out the back of his apartment and run away but officers on the roofs of nearby buildings spotted him.
He was arrested around 12.30pm Wednesday and charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, assault and illegal possession of a weapon.
Matthews kept the woman hostage from June 29 through Monday July 30, police said. It is not clear whether the victim escaped or if she was released.
She arrived at the Woodhull Medical Center on Tuesday and remained there, in intensive care, on Thursday, according to police spokesman, Sgt. Brendan Ryan.
Torture house: This beige three-story building is where Anthony Matthews allegedly tortured a woman for more than a month including burning her with an iron and heated screwdriver
As neighbours were left in shock, yesterday police investigators wearing white hazardous materials suits were coming and going from the three-story brick building, where Matthews lives on the first floor.
A neighbour told the New York Times that he had seen Matthews with a woman, but didn’t know her name.
‘Whenever she was around him she wouldn’t make eye contact with anybody,’ Shawn Williams said.
A woman who lives in the apartment beneath Matthews’ home told the paper she was trying to process what had happened right above her.
Matthews has previous arrests for assault and trespassing, police said.
