Whether it’s for an extravagant proposal or just a sing-a-long surprise, entertaining flash mobs typically lift people’s spirits.
However, a flash mob in Florida on Saturday night was decidedly more sinister.
A gang of about 300 teenagers mobbed a Wal-Mart in Jacksonville where they ran wild, destroyed $1,500 of property, started a food fight and fired gun-shots, according to police reports.
Smash mob: A gang of 300 or so teenagers stormed a Florida Wal-Mart on Saturday night, causing $1,500 worth of damage, firing gunshots and having a food fight
Investigation: Police believe that the massive group could have come on from an out-of-control party that the police broke up earlier in the night
The hundreds of teens, who police believe are all aged under 18, stormed into the store about 11.30pm.
People within the group posted the footage of the incident onto YouTube.
The 3-minute video shows the stampeding teenagers grabbing loaves of bread and fruit and starting a food fight.
As some ham it up for the camera, others career around in shopping carts, stealing and taking pictures of the riot on their phones.
Gunshots were apparently fired into the air in the parking lot outside the store, although no one was injured, the police report says.
Violent flash mobs, also known as ‘smash mobs’, are becoming increasingly frequent.
Recorded: Some of the teens filmed their illegal escapades and posted them on YouTube. Police are using the footage to identify and track down the perpetrators
Smash-and-grab: The teenagers overwhelmed store employees and security on their destructive rampage
Targeted: A Wal-Mart spokesperson defended their employees for calling 911 and not getting involved to break up the mob
Investigators suspect that the massive group could have come on from a party that the police broke up earlier in the night.
A 20-year-old was allegedly shot in the leg at the party, which was two miles away from the Wal-Mart, according to reports.
The police were called to the Wal-Mart just minutes after the party was broken up.
However, by the time officers arrived at the store the gang had run away, reported News 4 Jax.
Mugging: The teens hammed it up on camera as they trashed the store and ran through the aisles
Escape: By the time officers arrived at the store, the group had fled into the night
Gunshots: Police say one of the teens fired a gun into the air in the parking lot outside the store as they were leaving
There have been no arrests made but, if caught, the teenagers face criminal charges.
A Wal-Mart spokesperson defended their employees for calling 911 and not getting involved to break up the mob.
‘The actions of these teenagers were deplorable and put at risk the safety of innocent bystanders. We’re committed to assisting law enforcement in any way we can to help identify the people responsible for the commotion, including the acts of vandalism and theft that occurred at our store,’ read the statement.
