The ‘unknown chapter of human history’ in Europe 15,000 years ago: DNA shows hunter-gatherers were replaced by mystery group of people after the Ice Age

  • Researchers analysed mitochondrial DNA from ancient teeth and bones
  • They saw a marked change in the DNA of the population 14,500 years ago
  • Unique markers (M-haplotype) were also seen to disappear from Europe
  • But they can still be commonly found in modern Asian, Native American and Australasian people, showing a trail of the non-African migration
