Shanidar Z is the name given to the well-preserved remains of a female Neanderthal discovered in 2018 in the Shanidar Cave in Iraqi Kurdistan. Estimated to be around 75,000 years old, her skull was meticulously reconstructed from over 200 fragments, leading to a highly publicized facial reconstruction that challenges outdated perceptions of Neanderthals as primitive. The discovery, featured in the Netflix documentary “Secrets of the Neanderthals,” provides strong evidence of complex social behaviors and intentional burial practices among Neanderthals.
